My favourite type of book is historical fiction,. Especially before I travel to a new place it is a great way to learn about the country I am going to. After reading A Little Life, I typed into Google, "books like it.' The Hearts Invisible Furies by John Boyne was one of the top ones to come up. The New York Time gave it a great review. I would be leaving soon for Ireland so I decided to give it a try.
I don't read a lot of gay themed books, unfortunately there are not many great ones, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed The Hearts Invisible Furies. The novel starts in Ireland, then moves to Amsterdam, New York and then back to Ireland. It follows the life of Cryril Avery a gay man who was adopted at birth, from the 1940's for 75 years. You will learn the history of Ireland, but most importantly you will see what it was like being gay in Ireland and how much different it is today. The transformation if Cyril from a lost soul who finds himself will make you laugh, cry and root for him as he navigates his way back home.
